Outside of America: 5 Other Countries That Love Basketball

Courts Around the World

It’s hard not to think about the United States when you think about basketball. Some of the greatest names come from the States; they have a massive following, and top teams light up the court all across America. However, the United States is far from the only place with a massive b-ball following—join as we dribble on overseas courts!

1. Lithuania

Basketball is literally referred to as Lithuania’s “second religion,” so…it’s a big deal. To this day, it has a massive cultural following and a rich history that ties back to the Soviet Union, so people everywhere can’t get enough of it.

2. Philippines

Believe it or not, basketball was first introduced in the country by Christian missionaries. Since then, the sport has held great historical value, with the locals obsessed with the NBA—when they aren’t busy shooting free throws on their own courts!

3. China

Basketball is actually the top-watched sport in China, with the country providing its own league (the Chinese Basketball Association). Hundreds of millions of people engage in play, and it generates just as much interest on TVs. The commercialization only skyrocketed when Yao Ming joined the NBA!

4. Spain

You might assume soccer dominates Spain, but they’re just as interested in basketball. It’s the second most popular sport in the country, with Spain’s domestic league generating top talent. Native players in the NBA also added to the general interest.

5. Argentina

You may have the 2004 Olympics to thank for the Argentinians’ interest in basketball! While they were plenty interested beforehand, especially with young players encouraged to develop their skills, their ‘04 win only boosted the love of the game.
